Middle school me believed that Brian's heart surgery was the critical piece to understanding Shape of my Heart. I remember thinking "No, he wants to show us his literal heart! That he had operated on!" Adult me does not find this adds any more clarity to the lyrics.
I was such a BSB fan! Kevin was my favorite, obviously, cause yuck at little blond boys with bowl cuts..... I noticed you didn't share with us your favorite BSB! Everyone had one!
In the late 90s they were touring South America and rudely skipped Brazil, so me and a friend flew to Buenos Aires to watch them play La Bombonera. Our parents said yes, and only one of them accompanied us into the stadium (if only they knew...). They also said "okay" when us and the new friends we made on that plane ride to Buenos Aires (the BSB tshirts were the reason we found each other) asked to book one night at the same hotel they were staying at... without them. So five girls in a luxury hotel definitely NOT sleeping, just trolling the corridors and parking lot and elevators.... We did see Brian coming in from the parking lot at 4 am. His security guard used his hand to block my friend's camera. Just sharing this so everyone knows he's NOT nice. At least not at 4 am while ambushed in a parking lot by five speechless 15 year olds. What a scary mob.
While when having to choose between BSB and *NSYNC, I always chose the latter. But my favorite was actually 98 Degrees. Obviously this didn't help me with friends in middle school (bullied for pretty much everything I liked), but I stood tall! I loved their voices, I loved their muscles. Also, I was a fan of BBMak too and possibly saw them the most times in concert in the early 2000s.
Your description of an NSYNC girl vs a BSB girl really put into perspective why I was an NSYNC girl. I was incredibly loyal until this song! I owned this BSB album because I loved this song so much. It healed the rift. Closed the gap.
I'm sorry to Emily but she is full of bologna, no one was above the great boyband wars of the late 90s/early 2000s. And I can admit to not realizing Kevin is the hottest until much later in life. BSB Forever!
hahaha well she IS younger than me, so perhaps it was slightly before her time. It's amazing that we were all listening to this band with a GROWN HOT MAN in it and not realizing it!
Well, I'll be over here trying to make tragical happen if you need me. Thank you for this! Also, I must be in some sort of weird BSB time warp because while doing a Peloton class yesterday, Larger Than Life came on and I was transported right back to my teenage bedroom...where I had a NSYNC poster trying to deny my true BSB personality.
Have you seen their documentary Show 'Em What You're Made Of? I came across it on Tubi or Pluto or some such free channel a while ago and it is surprisingly good and somewhat sad, which I was not expecting!
Kerry the amount of time I spend thinking about this song (a banger that makes no sense) and it's video, along with getting that "hello hello hello" from The Call stuck in my head on a loop, is way more time that I should spend on anything at all, so thank you for this. haha
I got some "the Boys are auditioning" vibes during the parts where they were lined up against the wall with their little papers, but I can't for the life of me make this fit with the rest of the video.
(you have called me way the fuck out with your description of BSB fans lol)
Oh gosh, what a nostalgic trip this has been! 😂 I remember this video and how utterly confusing it was even back then. I was loyal to BSB because I knew about them first, but I did love both. And you’re right, their personalities did seem more defined! AJ’s presence gave them such an edge, lol.
I was a BSB fan mainly because I spent a two week trip with my 14 year old cousin in the summer of 2000 when I was 23 and she was in full on BSB love. I fell under the spell, what can I say??
Team BSB Forever. Also, Kevin was clearly the hottest one, and I was ahead of my time with that thought 😂
He really was!

omg I CANNOT believe I forgot about his heart surgery...we all loved that about him. He was vulnerable!

I love this story!!

Love that you were brave enough to be a 98 Degrees stan in a world that didn't understand you. A lone reed!

That's the power of this song. It heals!

I was scrolling through Peloton classes and checking out playlists and saw The Call...honestly, that WOULD get me pumped up to ride.
Have you seen their documentary Show 'Em What You're Made Of? I came across it on Tubi or Pluto or some such free channel a while ago and it is surprisingly good and somewhat sad, which I was not expecting!
No but I DEFINITELY need to watch it now!

I actually laughed out loud because after rewatching the video for The Call, "hello hello hello" is playing nonstop in my head!
I am so happy to know I'm not alone in this!

My description of BSB fans was the very definition of "it takes one to know one." I love that you referred to "their little papers," lol.
This is one of the greatest things I’ve ever read... broke the internet, Kerry.
hahaha thank you

I didn't appreciate AJ at the time (blinded by Brian) but now I can see that he was perhaps their strongest link.
Same! I was a Brian girl too.
I was a BSB fan mainly because I spent a two week trip with my 14 year old cousin in the summer of 2000 when I was 23 and she was in full on BSB love. I fell under the spell, what can I say??
Love that!
I . . .had never seen this video. Wow, what a wild ride.
I feel honored that I could introduce you to it.
