This is a rare instance of "I DID watch this movie Kerry is talking about!" but it's also an instance of "but it was 25 years ago and I don't remember much, but thanks to this summary, I remember the overall plot now!"
The thing is, when I first watched this I lived in another country. Now I live in Vermont, so I must locate this house.
I watched this with my BFF Amanda (in 2000, we were 15) and I totally agree it felt like a very "grown up" movie. I don't think I saw the trailer, because I remember being genuinely surprised by HF as a bad guy! I guess at the time you might only catch the trailer if you'd gone to a different movie or saw it on TV?
This was definitely from the dark days of the trailer telling way too much! Despite having seen it when it came out, I remembered almost nothing about it besides the bathtub, so I still got that trademark "Kerry describes a movie I have not and will never see" thrill.
I saw this movie in theaters with my grandmother and my dad!!! What a throwback memory. I can't believe they let me watch something with so much woo woo. They were very evangelical!!
Andrew Farmer also just wrote a sub stack about this movie!

(The cell signal thing is still true).
Recommending: Prisoners, Primal Fear, Double Jeopardy, and Flightplan!!!
