Do NOT watch An Officer and a Gentleman. It's awful. Thinking about the end of that movie makes me want to hurl. And I haven't seen it in decades. I love Terms of Endearment, too. Ohgod, the scene with her kids. It's a Larry McMurtry book. Emma shows up in a couple of his other '70s books, too.
Now I can’t tell you — in case you’d be mad about spoilers. Let’s just say that if Terms of Endearment is “Men Are Useless” cinema, then An Officer, etc is “Men Are Everything” cinema. 🤢
You’re the only person I know who watched Best Friends Forever, please tell me you’ve seen Playing House. It’s because of their Steel Magnolias references that I finally watched the movie last month and have now watched it four more times.
This is a movie where I well up just thinking of it. Debra Winger is so damn good (she's excellent in anything I've ever seen her in; Eulogy is probably one of my favorite performances of hers). And this movie is proof for me of what a good actor Jeff Daniels is; I LOVE him but absolutely loathe Flap. Is there a more useless husband?? 😆
Love this, they are useless in so many movies! Plus Shirley MacLaine can do no wrong. I'm going to have to watch this cause I don't know if I can ever by John Lithgow as the love interest :)
I associate Debra Winger with Urban Cowboy. Totally forgot she was in Officer and Gentleman because Urban Cowboy was my obsession during that era. I saw her face and immediately said "Sissy!" I couldn't even remember her real name. LOL! I haven't seen Terms of Endearment and I'm leery about watching it because of the tear-jerker factor. I cry so easily!
It’s been at least 20 years since I watched this, but could tell you a dozen lines that have stayed with me forever. The line about how easy Emma is to make happy (and how he should’ve done it more); the kid’s snarky comment about his mom being too lazy to sign them up for Scouts; her line—looking at all those piles—about what if they’d married someone who didn’t love books. Even Lithgow’s wife’s back problems. I don’t know if that’s because it was such a great movie or because my mind was so ripe for the strong impression it made.
Also, my five sisters and I were obsessed with Steel Magnolias, and basically had it playing on the VHS so often that my dad knew half of the lines and would tease us by saying “pink is my signature color” and “don’t talk about me like I’m not here.”
When he was dying, and we were all standing around his bed, he did his best Julia Roberts and said that line and made us all laugh and cry, just like Olympia Dukakis at the cemetery.

Lol, okay but this description kind of makes me curious about how it could be so bad!

I watched and loved the first two seasons and then never saw the third, for some reason! I need to finish it!

Yes, he's so good at being absolutely unlikeable!

I never would have thought I'd be into John Lithgow either, but this movie makes you feel unexpected things!

I've never seen that movie, which makes NO sense because I love John Travolta and that whole era of film!
I'm waiting for it to be one of your posts someday. TW : domestic violence, cheating - in case you are going to watch Urban Cowboy.
