I was so struck by her saying their marriage was primarily an agreement to support his work. That seemed so sad to me! And obviously it did not translate to a happy marriage in the end.
I’m listening to this on audio, read by Kirby Heyborne and he does the Muppet voices really well and for all the Jim quotes, sounds a lot like Jim. It is making the audio a very immersive experience.
I love how Jim listens so closely to his children and their opinions on the work. And this quote:
“The attitude you have as a parent is what your kids will learn from more than what you tell them,” Jim said later. “They don’t remember what you try to teach them. They remember what you are.”
Okay I need to request this from my local library; I always kind of imagine Everett as a sexy Mr.Rogers but now I fully get your vision. Also love the name Everett, and may name my child it (when I have one that is)
Ok I have more to add. I was born in 1976 so I’m definitely a child raised on Sesame Street and The Muppets, The Dark Crystal, Fraggle Rock, all of it! So as I read this I’ve been looking up all these bits on YouTube, rewatching old Muppet Show episodes, looking for all these bits and things mentioned in the book. Like Brian Henson as one of the kids in that Body Parts vs. Heavy Machinery short. And the counting videos with the baker who always falls in the end! I never realized how many skits end with a muppet blowing up! Seeing how the characters evolve like Miss Piggy and Fozzie and Oscar the Grouch. Noticing that they are right, because Jim voices both you rarely see Rowlf and Kermit together. Anyway, reading this has been a seriously nostalgic trip. All Sesame Street seasons are on Max and I might watch them all!
Also, this might be in the next section, but I love that Jim asked Brian Henson who the one guest on The Muppet Show he would want and he said Debbie Harry because he had a crush on her and they got her! Iconic.

Yeah I read that part out loud to my husband because it was so shocking to me…it’s hard to imagine being in such an unbalanced relationship!
This is kind of a good parenting book too! I love how his kids are so proud of him. What a great legacy to leave.

It’s such a good name for a kid!!
You should check out Jim Henson: Idea Man when you finish. They go a little more into his and Jane's marriage/relationship there!
Oh, thank you…I meant to watch this when it came out but forgot about it!
