okay it's not as good as Papa Roach but I DID once full-out start crying from Blink 182's "Dammit" because I was like, *sobs* this IS growing up!!! And I know this is a classic but Vada saying "he needs his glasses over her friend's open casket will always wreck me. Oh, also -- in Titanic specifically the moment when she blows the whistle and the guy says "COME ABOUT!" and you know he's turning around to come get her, I'm literally tearing up just typing about it lol

The night before I took a pregnancy test to confirm the arrival of my son, I burst into tears at the “Help!” scene of Zoe’s Extraordinary Playlist. My husband handled it in a very good natured way! I remember saying “have you ever really listened to the lyrics? It’s a sad song!!!!”

Okay, so books are the big one, obvs, but we've got:

FULL FLIGHT by Ashley Schumacher - it doesn't matter if you see the end coming, you will sob anyway

SECOND CHANCE SUMMER by Morgan Matson - fully embarrassed myself in front of my future family on a boat in Brazil; I got married anyway but I suspect this has scarred the relationship

MORE HAPPY THAN NOT by Adam Silvera - gets overlooked in the THEY BOTH DIE AT THE END buzz but BOY Adam can get you!

THE FAULT IN OUR STARS - I mean, obvious, but this was my first big cry book so it's worth mentioning!

OTHER MEDIA -

you know the scene in Princess Diaries 2 where Anne Hathaway lets the orphans be in the parade and Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway plays? Oh, lord. Gets me every time.

Jonathan Groff winning his first Tony Award this year - you're not prepared!!! https://youtu.be/cMcc5-mu_Uk?si=2QYvcU93uXT30BiT

The entirety of the Next to Normal cast recording, though especially "I've Been" and "There's a Light" (this is a big mental illness CW because that's what the show is about but BOY is it beautiful!)

Also, sometimes I watch this video of Daniel Radcliffe performing at the Tony Awards (there's a theme here) and cry because he seems so happy - https://youtu.be/cNTeeHhpxBE?si=HNwgMWfpSqxaFmic

And this Tony's opening number will murder your eyeballs - https://youtu.be/u93JgYGfxrY?si=DPOqfKd7vvVnpe3h

Have fun!! (??) !!

oh and also when I was fifteen I got really into the reality show GREASE: YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT, where they cast the next Sandy and Danny in Grease on broadway, and the guy I liked won Danny, and I cried SO HARD, but I suspect that might not work as well on a rewatch!

When I was pregnant, I once cried when Miley Cyrus's "Party in the USA" came on the radio because, as I explained to my husband, "she was so lonely and homesick and then she heard her favorite song and felt okay!"

I also can judge how imminent my period is based on my emotional response to Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting." I think because it makes me think of the video (RIP Donald Sutherland 😢).

About 50% of Bluey episodes get me, some more reliably than others. Also the "I Lava You" song from the short before the first Inside Out movie.

The movie “About Time.” I can’t even discuss the plot…I start crying. I can’t talk even think about it. Tears.

Songs: that damn Billie Eilish song from Barbie. And “lift me up” by Rihanna.

If the movie is made to make you cry, I'll be the only one with dry eyes, usually, I have a heart made of stone. Which is why, back in the early aughts, I thought I had a pregnancy scare cause I was crying over the olympics opening ceremony (2004, and I wasn't). Other moments I cried inexplicably: Lost in Space (the version with Matt Le Blanc) when Will watches the spaceship with his family exploding (a horrible sci fi movie? of course I cried). I cry every time I watch Bolt when Mittens is telling the story of how she lost her claws (pets are the kryptonite to my stone heart). And most recently, at the end of an agents of shield season (sci fi again!), when I thought they had killed off my favorite couple, I sobbed. For hours. My husband walked in on me and asked "omg what's wrong?" and I could barely get the words out, I was sobbing so hard. When he got the gist, he eye rolled and went to grab me a glass of water.

I have never cried so hard at a movie as at Finding Neverland. Just soooobbbed. (Yes, I saw Titanic in theaters as a teen, but I refused to be emotionally manipulated.) Alison Cochran's Here We Go Again is definitely the book that made me cry hardest, but Ender's Game and Project Hail Mary are the most surprising ones. And I just saw Hamilton this week, and in addition to all the usual suspect crying spots, it also gets me when George Washington says [sings] "I want to sit under my own vine and fig tree"

The Jurassic Bark episode of Futurama is the first thing that comes to mind. I just teared up reading the Wikipedia entry, that I looked up to remember the episode title.

I cried at The Wild Robot trailer too!! Whenever I need a good cry, I watch Hope Springs with Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones. I. Do. Not. Know. Why. It's such a wonderfully real movie, and I love seeing Streep in a role where she's giving a HUGE performance in a character meant to be small and timid. It always leaves me in tears. Also the movie Up!, but we don't watch that movie in our house. It's forbidden. I start crying at the credits. Life, sometimes, is just so beautiful we don't have the emotional capacity for it, and the overwhelm comes out as tears.

The episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine where Captain Sisko gets stuck in time and his son Jake spends his entire life trying to save him. Then at the end Jake succeeds in resetting the timeline by killing himself and Sisko is holding his dying, elderly son in his arms and telling him how proud he is 😭😭😭

Also this song, Joy Stops Time, by F*cked Up:

“The first thing that they do is break

Your heart and sell it back to you

You’re so afraid, and so you pay

And every day is yesterday

But love will make you feel alive

Remember what you have inside

Never sink, and never hide

They tried to break our dream but child

Joy stops time”

If I'm looking for a cry, Steel Magnolias. Coco gets me every time too. There's also a country song from the 90s (I think?) about a an old couple that makes me think of my grandparents and makes me cry. I don't think it's "Waiting on a Woman" by Brad Paisley (from 2005) but maybe?

The opening scenes of WALL-E, when he's clearly so lonely and looking for connection - tears every time.

Less out of seemingly irrational is definitely the scene in Fried Green Tomatoes when they stop the clock.
