Monthly Roundup Vol. 7
Getting mad about burgers in movies, the beginning of spooky season, a new seasonal drink to terrorize me, and Taylor Swift corner
I’m getting back on schedule with monthly roundups, so even though it seems like I just wrote one (I did), it’s time for another one! Luckily I’ve watched/read/listened to many things and also have plenty of Taylor Swift thoughts. Some might say too many Taylor Swift thoughts! Maybe last night I quoted some lyrics at Hollis to explain what might draw Taylor to Travis Kelce. Who can say.
This month has been pretty nuts, in a good way. Faking Christmas came out and I had an amazing launch week. I did events at The Book Loft in Columbus, Joseph-Beth in Cincinnati, and Wild Geese in Franklin, Indiana. Yes, I did leave Ohio.
These events were validating, life-giving, inspiring, soul-nourishing…I don’t know, can I come up with some more dramatic words for them? I had a great time. This will sound hyperbolic, but book events (whether my own or other people’s) always remind me people are inherently good. I know that’s a lot of pressure to put on a crowd of people watching someone talk about books, but I’m serious. I spend a lot of time by myself, which is the nature of this job, and I think sometimes when you’re alone a lot you can get kind of sucked into a weird internet version of people, one where everyone’s a meme or a Twitter rant or a terrible suggested Facebook post. And that’s, uh, not good for you. For me. And book events put me in close contact with people who are passionate about their jobs and communities, and readers who are passionate about books and their friends. Hearing from so many people who were buying copies of my books for their moms or their best friends, or people who read my books in their book clubs, or people who’d driven hours to be there, just meant a lot. It made me really excited to get back to work.
This week, you can see me talking to THE Tessa Bailey in Beavercreek about her new book, Wreck the Halls. I’m really excited about this one.
Let’s get to the roundup!
