This just came out in the UK this month, FINALLY, and I was very excited to go see it after seeing (but not actually reading much of) the Discourse about it when it came out in the US in June. And I do think it helped that I was aware that it wasn't a rom-com going in (although I also don't think I would have thought it was anyway, even without seeing people's complaints, because the set-up and the title both just to ME nodded at something a bit different) but I really enjoyed it? I agree that I am not entirely convinced that she and Chris Evans will have a happy life together because I think the money thing genuinely is SO ENORMOUS in relationships, and I don't think their romantic arc was built up well enough, but I found the ending emotionally satisfying and also I just enjoyed it. I found it weird and specific in a way that movies these days often aren't. More movies in this vein, please, Hollywood!
Love this! I went in wanting some escapism on a Tuesday night and to stare and Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, and for that it delivered and was a delight! The only thing that was missing for me was I wanted Dakota's character to have friends - not work friends, or clients, but I would have like to seen how she talked about Pedro Pascal and revisited the Chris Evans relationship with a trusted friend. The soundtrack may have been my favorite part of the movie though, no notes.
the very post I've been waiting for and even though I *think* I came down on Materialists a bit more negatively than you, I agree with all your points! especially it being a movie that gave you stuff to think about, visuals that will stay with you, etc. I also think about that scene in the kitchen a lot!!!
You may have come down on it a bit more negatively but all your points were CORRECT, so. And I feel like you understand Dakota on a level that few others do...perhaps better than she knows herself!
I have not seen this flick and I will probably not see it because I have an unreasonable bias against Dakota Johnson, but I do very much agree with you about not expecting things from movies. Surprise me! Entertain me! I'm here for the chaos!
I have a friend who's in love with her and will see anything she's in no matter what it is, and he makes sure to tell me every time he has a transcendent experience while I make sure to tell him every time she annoys me. For BALANCE!
This recap was SO GOOD. I saw it in my inbox and immediately stopped what I was doing to read. I loved this movie mainly because I had no expectations going in. My friend thought it would be a true rom-com and hated it. The leg-breaking surgery conversation was one of my favorites too. I can picture Pedro Pascal in that scene, 100%. I didn't connect the scars right away to the surgery. I figured it was going to be some tragic thing. But it was even BETTER. :)
P.S. I would definitely would not notice extra people at my wedding reception. We had a live band and I was having too much fun dancing.

Exactly, weird and specific is right!! I want movies that feel like they're made by a person, and this one did.
I have been waiting all summer for this post!!!!!!!!!!!
I definitely would not have noticed two strangers crashing my wedding, but I also got married at a bar, so!

That's a very good point that I didn't even consider. The girl had zero friends!

stop saying things like that, it's too soon for me to update my business cards!

You and many people may have an unreasonable bias against Dakota, but I have an unreasonable bias TOWARD her so I guess it balances out!

Yes! I was like, "Was he in a bad accident or something??" before being like, "ohhhhhh."
