Im a graphic designer by day and besides lack of taste, people also dont really put value anymore in the work and the hours it takes to do something good! And I am a fast designer now because I've been doing it for over 20 years. And yet... my work has been slowly been replaced by AI. They rather do the 5 minute thing than spend 5 minutes writing me an email so I can make them a real good thing in a couple days. It's ROUGH. o yeah, maybe I got a bit teary eyed reading your post. Ugh, or new school just posted an AI flyer in parentsquare for a back to school picnic and I definitely was like "well now I do not want to go." Give me back the Word TextArt flyers! Let Clippy suggest some stock images!! We can do it ourselves because we always had before

My kids school had AI flyers for the summer fair, and it made me so mad. Why not ask the kids to design one? You could make a whole thing out of it and it would be fun and show them you value creativity! If there’s a polite way to ask schools to reconsider using AI for things like this I’d really love people’s ideas on how.
I love a fair! Our county fair is next weekend and I'm entering in the home goods category again. I entered for the first time last year and my pumpkin roll won the blue ribbon for cakes! Also can't wait to see the other entries and eat a corn dog the length of my arm.

Yes I did soak things in tea to make them look old-timey!! I love that you're talking about the fair poster scandal because I was also following it on reddit as it was happening and could not believe it. I was sure it was a joke at first!!!

Also, I went to Columbus last week with my husband. We live in the scorched west so it took two flights to get there. My future daughter-in-law said about this impromptu, long-needed trip for just my husband and I, “It’s not even anywhere fun!” But, friend, it was quite possibly the best week of my life. And it included a surprise cemetery discovery on one of my walks! So I guess reading this about Ohio and Columbus and mention of the delights of a cemetery walk just hit the spot. Thanks for that! (It was the Indian Run Cemetery at the end of the Indian Run Falls trail. Founded in 1813!)
I have so many thoughts, stories that are similar. Here's a few:
I trained as a graphic designer BEFORE Macs were used. Learned using Rapidograph Pens, compasses, hot press paper, large format cameras, and NO computers. Degree was immediately obsolete because within the time between my last 2 years of school, employers had switched to Macs. My friends who graduated the year before, got jobs and were trained on the job. By the next year, they wanted people to know it already. That being said, I love that I know how to design without having a computer do it for me.
Most of my art takes a REALLY long time to complete, sometimes years. Frequently, I put something away to age (literally).
I have some quilt sections that were pieced by a former tenant decades ago. When she passed away at close to 100, her nieces came to clean out her place. They took little because they were in their 80's and had houses full of stuff. What would they want with most of it? Anyway, we kept a couple of pieces of furniture and I stored these quilt sections for more than 20 years. A few days ago I washed them and plan to finally piece them together. Whether I use the quilt myself or gift it, it'll be satisfying to have completed it for someone who started it so long ago.
I don't show my art publicly on social media, but every 5 years or so (not an exaggeration) will load some pics to my private account just so friends can see what I've been doing. It's important to share. I'd rather spend time making stuff than marketing it. Most days I'm working on something, even if only for a few minutes.
I used to get frustrated if what I make isn't "perfect " (I blame the design degree). Now I love when things are a little off. Even though I may take a while to complete something, it's easier to call it done when you're not obsessing over perfection.
This is so true!!! There are local businesses that use those stupid AI flyers and they ALL LOOK THE SAME!! I personally have decided to not go to local businesses that use AI for their advertising. Either do your own or hire a real person to do something that is truly yours and doesn’t look fake. My real pet peeve is when they AI their photos in flyer…please girl you don’t look like that!
I have hated AI art since I saw it mix Icon writing with Lord of the Rings images. It was an abomination.
My husband has actually found some uses for AI, like troubleshooting our broken AC unit and was able to fix it for $26 rather than $600. So I can’t completely say it has no use, but people will inevitably use AI for the wrong purposes.

Nothing turns my stomach faster than an AI flyer or AI restaurant menu. Why cant they use micrsoft word art and rock with that? 😭
